For those familiar with the current Nigerian comic book industry, Jide Martin is a name they will know well. The founder of Comic Republic, which is arguably the biggest and best publisher in the country, Jide Martin is also the artist and creator behind the Republic’s flagship title character Guardian Prime. He also draws for the current series based on their flagship title “Guardian Prime: Genesis“.
Jide almost all the issues in the original series drew all the art in the original The Might of Guardian Prime series (Stanley Obende also pitched in) and while he may not also be the only artist on the current series (Jefferey Oyem who also worked on the character also) his work on the title and in building this character has been pretty damn good and with a new narrative in place, readers seem to have a lot to look forward to with this. As one of the pioneers of the new age of Nigerian comic books, he’s done what is most needed from any comic book artist and that is, he’s drawn actual comic books for an actual comic book series that has been around consistently for some time now. And in my humble opinion that goes a long way.
His work (art) and commitment to pushing the comic book medium in this country, more than justifies his place on this list.
Here’s some of his work:
