Well there’s no surprise here that Stanley Obende is at the top of this list. Even without all the accolades and awards he’s managed to rack up over the last couple of years aside, the truth is, apart from being one of the best artists in the game, Stanley meets one most important criteria for this list. And that is, he’s drawn more comic books than almost anyone. Yes, Stanley “Stanch” Obende has worked for almost everybody in the Nigerian comic book industry at one point or the other on such titles like, Uhuru: Legend of the Windriders, Epoch Studios’ Barikisu, Etan Comics Jember and Comic Republic’s Avonome to name a few. You name the comic creator and it’s a safe bet that Stanley has drawn something for them. The share volume of his work and the number of titles he’s worked on earns him the number one spot.
Criteria: I’m going to mention this here simply for the sake of the people who won’t even bother to check the criteria for this list and will leave the site and start complaining about, only God knows what. The truth of the matter is that being Nigerian comic book maker/creator isn’t easy. There are many, many comic creators in Nigeria and many would probably consider themselves more than eligible for this list. However, I am of the belief that you can’t call yourself a comic book artist simply because you can draw comic book art. Artists like Stanley and a few others have actually put in the work, not just to draw pretty pictures they can show to their friends on face book, but to actually work on comic book titles with more than 1 or 2 issues in a single series and have done so consistently. And this is the most important criteria for making this list.
Right, so now that’s settled let’s check out some of mister Obende’s work:
