Roye Okupe is founder of YouNeek Studios, and he created the company in order create an avenue that would allow him to pursue his dream of creating a diverse library of superheroes. Youneek studios don’t merely delve into comics books however, as they’ve produced a couple animated shorts as well. But for the purpose of the Top Ten, we will stick solely to the comic books. Enter E.X.O and The Legend of Wale Williams an Afro-futuristic tale taking place in a futuristic and much better version of Nigeria.

I mean, really, why wouldn’t they be on this list?   E.X.O. The Legend of Wale Williams Part One, was released to critical acclaim and has since been featured on CNNForbesThe New York TimesNBCThe GuardianABC7BBCThe Huffington PostMashabe and many, many more! Youneek Studios sophomore graphic novel: Malika – Warrior Queen also released with critical acclaim and sold more than 40,000 copies during the Diamond Comic’s Free Comic Book Day in 2017 and has multiple awards at ceremonies most Nigerian comic book creators would give their souls for. Wow!

So, why isn’t Youneek Studios number one? Well, it’s quite simple. While Youneek Studios is probably the creme of the crop when it comes to quality and story out of all the publishers in the top ten, and also while there’s no doubt that they do great work,  accolades aside, Comic Republic, Pedacomics and Crasher have a lot more content to offer the average comic reader at the moment. I know this may seem like I’m placing quantity over quality, but I also have to take into account that fact that one of the influencing criteria for the Top Ten is also content. So, while Youneek studios has great titles, with great artists like Sunkanmi Akinboye (E.X.O) and Chima Kalu (Malaika) and a pretty good narrative to follow, most of the comics I’ve read leave off in a way that made me feel like I hadn’t seen quite enough. Even though they also make you feel like you would like to. See more that is. I would personally like to see more of Malika and even E.X.O.

It’s important to remember in these rankings things may change and no one is safe.
