Kugali are a fairly new publisher in the Nigerian comic industry, but they have made great strides towards elevated the playing field and in the short time that they’ve been around, they done enough work to earn their place on my list. The Kugali anthology, which features work from various Nigerian and African comic creators is the brain child of a group of comic enthusiasts who, if you can believe it, started off their journey into the world of Nigerian comic publishing with a podcast called (what else) The Kugali podcast.
Recently, they made the sometimes inevitable jump from comic book lovers into the world of comic publishing with the Kugali Anthology. An anthology of Africa-centric comic stories with contributions from a number of African comic creators. Their first anthology featured titles like, Under A Jovian Sun (Coker Co-op), the more comical Mumu Juju (Etubi Onucheyo) and Razor Man (Masuku Masuku), which happens to be a comic book by a Zimbabwean comic creator. While the Raki Edition of the anthology series featured titles like Oro, Kayin&Abeni and Iku.
Kugali have done pretty well with this, especially in such a short time. Partly because an anthology in never a bad way to go, but mostly because they’ve managed to give some lesser known comic book titles some much needed exposure. Also, there is the fact that they include comics by creators from other countries in Africa. Some of which I’m pretty sure I would never of heard about if it wasn’t for the anthology.
When it comes to presentation, distribution and promotion, Kugali have also done a decent enough job in this regard and have made great strides to place themselves among some of the more respected and older publishers out there in such a time.
Unfortunately, being relatively new to the industry means that one can’t expect a whole lot of content from them as of yet, but they’ve already made a better start than quite a lot of the old guard did in their time (myself included), especially when it comes to the turnover time on their anthology series. They are already prepping to release another anthology as I’m writing this story. There somewhat low rating and ranking in this list is based solely on the criteria of content. Given time, I expect that they might very well move up the ranks.
